Budapest Transport company offers free travel to Ukraine refugees

Refugees from Ukraine can use the services of Budapest’s public transport company BKK free of charge until August 31, BKK said on Tuesday.

Until 31 August 2022, Ukrainian citizens who have been forced to leave their homes because of the war will be entitled to travel free of charge on BKK lines – with the exception of the 100E bus, the funicular, the nostalgia lines, and the boat – and on the “blue” buses of the HÉV and the surrounding areas within Budapest, upon presentation of their Ukrainian travel document.

In order to travel free of charge, refugees must have one of the following documents: a Ukrainian passport, a Ukrainian identity card, a Ukrainian residence permit, a residence permit issued by a Hungarian authority in which Ukrainian citizenship is registered, in the case of students, if they do not have the above documents, a Ukrainian student card is required, or any other document proving Ukrainian citizenship or at least Ukrainian residence.

For dual citizens who have one of their citizenship in Hungarian but cannot present a document proving their Hungarian citizenship together with a document proving their Ukrainian citizenship or Ukrainian address for verification, the benefit is currently not granted.

The Budapest Transport Centre continues to work to make the situation of refugees from Ukraine as easy as possible. The company is also asking its customers to assist refugees on BKK flights during their journeys, if necessary.
